The Siskin ‘Spinus spinus’
This little finch is resident and breeding all across the UK, but more birds arrive from Europe during the winter to bolster numbers. They make their homes in coniferous and mixed woodland and so, conifer plantations have helped spread its breeding range They are more numerous in Scotland and Wales. Their diet consists mostly of tree seeds, but feed their young on insects.
The siskin is known for being quite tame, making use of bird tables in the winter. However in the Spring they become more elusive and secretive. This has led to a lovely bit of German folklore, that siskins guard a magic stone in their nests that makes them invisible!
