The Greenfinch ‘Chloris cholris’

The social greenfinch was a bird I remember seeing in huge numbers feeding and squabbling amongst themselves at my grandmothers bird table when I was little. Sadly an outbreak of a parasite-induced disease, trichomonosis, led to a huge decline in numbers, with the greenfinch being added to the UK red list in 2021. Keeping bird feeders clean is of vital importance to limiting the spread of this disease.

This pretty olive green bird can also be found in Australia and New Zealand after being introduced by settlers to remind them of home.
