No. 5 The Barn Owl - Limited Edition of 100
The Barn Owl ‘Tyto alba’
A long standing favourite of mine! My first real encounter with birds of prey was holding a barn owl at a falconry show when I was a little girl, I’ve been besotted ever since and my fascination continues to this day.
The barn owl has near silent flight thanks to their soft edged feathers, those poor voles don’t hear them coming! This eerily silent flight and white figure led to them being called the ghost owl and in folklore many considered them “the bird of doom,” not to mention their unsettling shrieks and hisses! They were often seen as bad omens in the 18th and 19th centuries, many people believed that the screech of an owl flying past the window of a sick person meant imminent death.
