No. 6 The Dartford Warbler - Limited Edition of 75
The Dartford Warbler ‘Sylvia undata’
This plucky little warbler, also known as the furze wren, is a bit of a comeback star! Back in the 1960’s after a particularly harsh winter, their numbers plummeted to just 10 pairs in Dorset. With the help of preserving and restoring habitat, their numbers and range have gradually recovered. They’re restricted to Southern and Eastern England and Southern Wales where they reside in heathland. The dense gorse is vital for keeping them warm through the winter and protecting their nests.
Their name actually comes from the naturalist John Latham who first recorded this pretty bird 250 years ago. Although the birds were discovered in Bexley, he named them after the place he was practising medicine at the time - Dartford. This still ruffles some feathers in the ornithology world to this day!
Conservation Status - Amber. UK 3,200 pairs.
