The Blue Tit ‘Cyanistes caeruleus’

Such a pretty little bird with their blue caps, they’re actually the only British tit with blue feathers. All birds can see ultra-violet light and blue tits heads glow brightly under a UV light, this is potentially how females pick their partners, preferring males with the brightest crests.

Like the great tit, they’re a frequent visitor to bird tables and can be found in woodland, farmland, urban and suburban areas. Their diet consists of caterpillars, insects, spiders, nuts and seeds, in winter they can form flocks with other tits to search for food.

Conservation Status - Green. UK breeding birds 3,600,000.
