The Great Tit ‘Parus major’

The Great tit is our largest tit here in the UK, and a frequent visitor to the bird table. They can be found in woodland and farmland as well as urban areas. Their diet consists of insects, nuts and seeds. Back when milk was commonly delivered to the doorstep in glass bottles, great tits, along with blue tits learnt to puncture the foil caps to drink the high-fat cream at the top of the bottle.

The black belly stripe on the male is much broader than the female, in fact the broader the stripe on the male, the more attractive he is to the females.

Conservation Status - Green. UK breeding birds 2,500,000.
