The Kingfisher ‘Alcedo atthis’

This stunning little azure and copper bird is the only kingfisher native to the UK, and you’re lucky to catch a glimpse of one! In fact, kingfishers are so hard to spot they inspired the saying ‘Only the righteous see the kingfisher’.

They make their homes in dense cover near fresh water. Hunting from perches near the water, their favourite snacks are minnow and stickleback. They’ll quite happily feast on tadpoles, shrimps and other aquatic insects too.

Conservation Status - Green. UK breeding pairs 3,800 to 6,400 pairs.
